Today’s Frequently Asked Keto Questions:

First I’m going to answer the questions with what you’ll generally hear a keto guru tell you, then I’m going to throw in my two cents!

What can I eat on a low carb diet?

You can eat meat, chicken fish, seafood, and other proteins, along with select healthy fats and carbohydrates primarily from non-starchy vegetables, cheese, cream, and nuts.

My two cents: You can eat a large variety of foods, they just have to work with your goals and not against them. Don’t fall into the “keto foods” trap. No food is keto; keto is a state the body enters into. Each person processes sugars differently. Some people can eat bananas and some people can’t. Some people can eat a small serving of potatoes and some can’t. Be willing to find what works for you. If you are scared, you will gain weight by trying new things, wait until you reach your goal to test the waters.

What foods are not allowed?

No refined sugar, sweets, fruit, rice, pasta, bread, grains, starches, starchy vegetables, flour, and products made with it, or beans are allowed, especially in the beginning. Slow integration of some carbs like, berries, and beans can take place as you progress and reach your goals and how much and what carbs you can have depends on your weight loss progress and how those carbs affect it.

My two cents: The foods that make you crave sugar and the foods that you can’t eat without getting knocked out of ketosis. Only you can answer this after trial ad error.

How many carbs can I eat?

The Ketogenic diet recommends 20 grams or less per day, at the very least 50 grams or less. However, typically, the more active you are, the more carbs you can eat and still lose weight. I agree with this and have found that some people can even eat up to 100 carbs per day and stay in ketosis.

Do I have to count calories?

Low carb diets advocate eating to satisfaction, and there is no need to count calories. When you eliminate unhealthy carbs from your diet, you rid yourself of out of control cravings, stabilize blood sugar and consequently the appetite, and research has shown that reducing carb intake results in reducing overall calorie consumption naturally and without starvation.

My two cents: When you stall for over four weeks, start counting calories.
